Personally, I believe that Chilton left the orders for a couple of obvious reasons: first, he is allegedly from Michigan. This may have led to a Northern loyalty and his thinking that he would serve as an unofficial spy for the Union army in his own mind. Second, he believed that by leaving the orders, he would help the war end quicker. This idea would explain all the evidence, while disproving an idea of a conspiracy.
